7 Bad Habits You Should Stop Doing to Your Eyes


All of us have developed some everyday bad habits for eyes that can actually spoil your vision. However, since most of us are not aware of these habits, learning about the 7 habits that are bad for your eyes and taking steps to correct them can help you protect your vision and keep your eyes safe in the long run.

#1: Writing or Reading in Poor Lighting Conditions

Writing or reading at night is a great way to relax after a hard day's work. However, if your reading or writing material (book or pad) is not illuminated properly, it can cause eye strain. Consistent eye straining is not good for the eyes and can make it difficult for you to concentrate and work comfortably.

#2: Gazing at the Sun Directly

Many people are occasionally tempted to stare at the sun directly. This bad habit should be avoided completely. Direct exposure to the ultra violet rays of the sun can harm your eyes and lead to cataracts and macular degeneration. It is highly recommended that you avoid looking at the sun directly with your eyes. Ensure that you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the UV rays of the sun. #3: Smoking

Smoking damages your eye tissues and increases your chances of developing macular degeneration. In fact, nearly 25% of age-related macular degeneration cases are caused due to smoking.

#4: Rubbing Itchy eyes

Rubbing itchy eyes frequently is another bad eye habit that can damage your eyes. A great home remedy for itchy eyes is to place a cold compress gently over them for a few minutes. Avoid using a warm compress as the heat can increase the discharge of histamines and make the itching even worse.

#5: Reading While Travelling

Reading in a moving bus or car is one of the most common eye bad habits that most people follow. Although reading while travelling is a great way to prevent boredom, engaging in this habit can extend your eyes, making it difficult for them to focus. Additionally, reading while in motion can cause to motion sickness leading to dizziness, headache, vomiting and weakness.

#6: Using inferior Quality make- up products

Using cheap or inferior quality make- products is another bad habit that can harm your vision. Cheap or budget make- up products contain ingredients that can be detrimental to eye health. Although using these products can help you save money, it is best to avoid using them. However, if you have to use them, ensure that you remove your make- up thoroughly before retiring to bed at night.

#7: Swimming sans Goggles

Swimming without goggles or keeping your eyes open while swimming is another bad habit that can prevent you from keeping your eyes healthy. Swimming without protection can cause the chemicals in the pool to negatively affect your eyes. As a result, you may experience fuzzy vision, irritation and itchiness. To protect your eyes when swimming, ensure that you keep your eyes closed tightly or wear tight fitting goggles for eye protection.
